Top Performances from Asciak Tennis Academy at the Malta Junior Open 2024

The Malta Junior Open 2024 wrapped up on a sweltering weekend, with the finals held on last Saturday and Sunday morning at the Marsa Sports Club. The event, showcasing the best young tennis talent from Malta, saw exceptional performances from players from the Asciak Tennis Academy.


With the presentation of trophies taking place on Court No. 1, the atmosphere was charged with excitement and pride as the winners and runners-up were honoured for their remarkable achievements. We extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Marc Gingell Littlejohn, President of the Malta Tennis Federation, and the Club’s Chairman Mr. Godwin Borg, along with the Tennis Section Chairman Eng. Anthony Mifsud, who were present to award the trophies. Special thanks also go to Mr. Jevon Dimech, the tournament director, and the entire committee for their outstanding organisation of the event.

The Asciak Tennis Academy players, at their home base at the Marsa Sports Club, demonstrated exceptional skill and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Our players excelled across various categories, showcasing their hard work and dedication. Here’s a roundup of their notable achievements:


U10 Boys Singles

James Xuereb emerged as the champion, displaying impressive form throughout the tournament. In the final, James defeated his close friend and training partner Daniel Fleri Soler with a score of 6-2, 6-1. Daniel, who also performed admirably, was the runner-up. Both players exhibited excellent tennis and made it an exciting event for the spectators.

U10 Girls Singles

Ena Tanti claimed the title of Malta U10 Tennis Champion. In a thrilling final, Ena overcame Dawn Azzopardi with a score of 6-1, 6-3. This victory marks Ena's first open final win. She showcased remarkable skill and determination, defeating Mara Farrugia and Mia Busietta in the earlier rounds. Ena’s performance was especially notable as she won the tournament without dropping a set.

U12 Boys Singles

Andy Gingell Littlejohn was the runner-up in the U12 Boys Singles.

Andy faced a formidable opponent in Gianluca Pace in the final and was defeated with a score of 3-6, 1-6. Despite the loss, Andy’s journey to the final was marked by strong performances and growth throughout the tournament.


U14 Boys Singles

Kelian Lauwers showcased his exceptional skills by reaching the final of the U14 Boys Singles. In a closely contested match, Kelian was defeated by Gianluca Pace in a highly contested 3 set match.


U14 Girls Singles

Lily Schranz was the runner-up in the U14 Girls Singles, competing against the strong Pippa Cutugno. Lily lost in the final with a score of 3-6, 2-6, but her performance throughout the tournament was commendable.

U16 Boys Singles

In the U16 Boys Final, Lauwers defeated Julian Grech, another promising athlete of the Asciak Tennis Academy. Additionally, Kelian, alongside Mikela Bonano, secured victory in the mixed doubles, further showcasing his exceptional talent and versatility.

U16 Girls Singles

Emma Montebello won the U16 Girls Singles, adding another accolade to her impressive career. Emma, who represents Malta in ladies' events, defeated fellow academy player Ema Jade Vella. Ema Jade also reached the final of the mixed doubles, showcasing her strong performance throughout the tournament.
